Brisbane beers you need to know about

The past couple of years have seen Brisbane explode as a destination for beer lovers, with brewery after brewery opening up around us. In light of this growing demand for quality beer, we were thrilled to see Tapworks Bar & Grill open its doors last year as North Brisbane’s ultimate craft beer dining experience. We had a chat to Glenn Vos, the Director of Tapworks, to chat about the excitement surrounding Brisbane beer.

Can you tell us about the story behind Tapworks? How it started?

It all started with a 6 pack of Stone & Wood at our bottleshop in Greenslopes. A quick meeting then and there, a viewing of the Westfield dining precinct and a years’ worth of research on what we felt craft beer customers were after, and we created our concept; to open the largest craft beer bar and grill on Brisbane’s Northside.

Most of the craft beer bars in Brisbane are catering to a niche market, aligning themselves to craft beers that are always changing in store. The beers are considered “out there” and you will hardly ever see the same craft beer on tap again. But we felt this contradicted what we’d so often heard from customers, asking for repeats of particular beers they’d tried a few weeks ago, as well as more popular beer varieties.

So at Tapworks, our beers are on tap for as long as they’re popular and trendy. However, nine taps of unique beers are available on rotation to satisfy customers that have an endless thirst for new and interesting beers that push the boundaries. Beers that are either limited edition, seasonal or highly ranked on worldwide beer ranking sites qualify for this rotation.

In total, our first Tapworks venue has 30 taps of beers, ciders, ginger beers and wines on tap. Our focus is on mainstream craft at good value, which means we have a core range of local and Australian craft beers on offer at all times, including Balter, Pirate Life and Green Beacon.

How can Brisbanites test different beers at Tapworks?

Upon entry to the venue, you’ll notice twelve taps of familiar beers like Great Northern and Kirin, popular craft beers like Balter and Stone & Wood, as well as interesting tap items like ginger beer or apple cider. Everything from these twelve taps are beverages that Australians know and love. From there, we have an enormous menu of craft beers from around the world for beer geeks to try.

We also offer customers a beer flight to sample four pony sized glasses (148ml each) of every single one of our 24 beers on tap.

Any interesting Australian or Brisbane beers on the roster at the moment?

Local favourites like Fortitude Brewing, Ballistic and Newstead Brewing are always popular. The biggest surprise hit, whilst scary at first is the Framboise a Trois fruit beer from Hawkers. Our full tap list can be found here.

The most popular beers on tap are the current top 2 beers from the hottest 100 beers, Balter XPA and Stone & Wood.

And lastly, what’s your favourite meal on the menu to enjoy with a cold beer?

Our homemade parmigiana and classic burger are the most popular menu items with our beer. The small bites selection such as calamari and duck spring rolls are great if you’re just after some classic beer food with your craft beer.
