Sleep tight: Guide to getting a good night's sleep

Sleep tight: Guide to getting a good night's sleep

Want a better night’s sleep? Here are five ways to settle your senses to ensure a full night of pure, interrupted slumber.

Feel good, sleep better. Pyjamas made of quality fabrics that are breathable and comfortable on the body such as cotton, silk or linen will assist in promoting a better sleep. Visit Peter Alexander to find the perfect pair for you. Oh, and don’t forget to try them on like you would any other outfit, as it’s now trendy to wear them outside the house. We also suggest going a size up for ultimate comfort.

When is comes to bedding, layering is key. As temperatures change throughout the night it's ideal to ensure you can adjust your layers accordingly. We suggest opting for natural fibres; cotton, linen and bamboo sheets. You’ll find these at Adairs or Bed Bath N' Table. Pro tip - try a weighted blanket from Myer to help calm a restless body, reduce feelings of anxiousness and improve sleep.

A good pillow is also key to sleeping well - however, finding the right one for you is not an easy task. A good pillow can make or break a good night’s sleep. Memory foam pillows conform to your preferred sleeping style, providing the right type of support. You can purchase these from David Jones.

Winding down before bed is not always easy. If you ever find it too quiet to sleep, we suggest playing calming music to trigger your body’s relaxation response. Once you’ve created the ultimate calming playlist for you, listen to your chilled-out tunes with new speakers or headphones from JB HiFi. If silence is more of your jam (or you happen to live with a rather noisy bunch), noise-cancelling headphones from David Jones might be a better option for you. Silence is golden!

Ever wondered what you should eat or drink before bed? Herbal infused tea is our number one pick. Chamomile blends from T2 Tea will help you and relax. Bananas are also rich in magnesium and contain serotonin, so if you’re starving before bed, this is a snack that will relax your muscles and encourage sleep. You’ll also find magnesium supplements at Natures Farm. Magnesium is an important mineral for overall health and will aid with muscle relaxation to assist with sleep.

Adjusting the scents around you can help improve your sleep quality. Aromatherapy scents such as lavender, vanilla, valerian and jasmine are particularly well known for their ability to send you off to dreamland. Whether you lather shower gel and body wash from Lush, spray pillow mist from MECCA or burn oil in a diffuser from Dusk, these relaxing scents are sure to promote a night of relaxing, restful sleep.

It’s much easier to get to sleep when visual distractions are limited. Turn off your phone, laptop and TV and curl up in bed with the latest best-selling book from QBD Books. When you’ve finished reading, cover those tired eyes with a silk eye mask from Target.
