Meet the Stylists: Interior Styling Sessions
Just like personal styling, interior and home styling is fashionable, personal and forever evolving. To celebrate the launch of Interior Style Sessions at Westfield Carindale, we spoke to our stylists Sara and Leticia, to chat all things interiors, decorating and finding the perfect pieces for your home.
Tell us a little about your style at home?
My “HomeStyle” really is about creating a space for my family where there is work, play, athletes training and a space to share with family and friends whenever I can. I have created a home which is open plan and layers colours and textures to create interest and comfort, nothing is “off limits” and most of the spaces can be adapted for any purpose.
I love soft furnishings in different fabrics which I can change seasonally to suit the weather or when I want a fresh look or a particular trend really appeals to me, throws and cushions are rotated from bedrooms to family rooms as the desire takes me!
Neutral, clean, tonal - simple, functional yet stylish living space. We live in a Queenslander and while I love trends I'm not into clutter. I'm obsessively tidy so in terms of home less is more to me.
What’s your favourite space in your home and why?
My favourite space is the kitchen/dining/family space because it is the heart of our home and the hustle and bustle that comes with a busy family. When you walk in you feel calm and cant wait to relax, cook and talk about the day. The children study and train in parts of the space, my husband and I catch up on the day and friends settle in for a long chat over a coffee or glass of wine.
Dining room - while only small, we have an intimate round table of 5 that opens out onto our Queenslander deck, there is plenty of natural light and the breeze flows in - with two young ones at home I find this is the place we now spend most of our time as it’s right in the centre of our home, an open layout means prep and conversation can unfold together, I can be in the kitchen while the girls are in the living room or out on the deck.
How did you get into interior styling and decorating?
After being a stylist for many years I frequently saw a connection between people, their style in dress and their homes, realising that the home is often a better reflection of a persons style than what they wear and if you understand that, you can translate your best colours and textures and shapes into your wardrobe as well.
What do you love most about interior styling and decorating?
Homes need to be many things and these differ for each person, I enjoy working closely with my clients to help bring their home to life.
The same way I enjoy styling with fashion - the creativity of mixing high end investment furnishings with trendier styling pieces to add personality to your home and the way simple touches can completely refresh a room or space. Also I love to delve into the art of table dressing. The best part of pulling it all together is sourcing all the product!
Your tricks of the trade for finding the perfect pieces to add to your home?
I find inspiration everywhere, magazines, nature, holidays and so when I see something I love I know I must buy it and make it fit in! Invest in good quality pieces of furniture because they are used everyday and are part of the canvas of a home. These can then be re-styled and moved around as you see fit. It is very easy to be overwhelmed by all the beautiful homewares available so be focussed, think about your colour palette, what you want to keep and the mood you are trying to create, and then look for things that work within those.
The key is to working with the space - each home is different in design, energy and scale. Gather ideas and inspiration together and start small, the key is to not 'over style, find pieces that represent who you are.
