Cleansing devices: we try the Foreo Luna Mini 2

Once upon a time, it wasn't that strange to just give our face a quick wash with soap and warm water before bed. Now, when it comes to our nightly skincare regimen, we're spoilt for choice. Soap is a big no-no, as we experiment with micellar waters, milky cleansers, grainy scrubs, age-defying serums and radiance-boosting masks instead. We're also encouraged to swap the flannel face cloth we once used in the shower every night for a high-tech cleansing device.

But while most of us have converted to our favourite products by now, these skin care tools are still picking up speed. Some of us use them, while the rest are happy with our good old fingertips. The latest 'it' toy on the market is the Foreo Luna from Shaver Shop – a futuristic-looking silicone device promising to maximise the benefits of our products, offer a super deep clean, reduce blemishes and even reverse and prevent wrinkles by massaging and relaxing our facial muscles.

It goes without saying that we absolutely had to give it a try.

What is it?

Touted as one of the most innovative of all the cleansing devices, the Foreo Luna Mini 2 uses T-Sonic (transdermal sonic) pulsations to slough away dead skin cells, remove 99.5% of dirt, oil and makeup build-up, and improve the absorption of skin care products.

It's a small tool that sits comfortably in the palm of your hand. This updated Foreo features three zones: smaller, softer bristles to gently cleanse skin, thicker bristles at the top for precision cleansing and broader bristles on the back for oilier skin.

It's just a bonus that it's cute too!

How do I use it?

First things first: apply your cleanser. Go for a milk, gel or cream cleanser, avoiding anything too grainy or clay-based. Leave the cleanser on your face.

Grab your Foreo Luna Mini 2 and switch it on. Move through the intensities until you find one that's comfortable for you.

Apply it to your face, moving it in light, brushing movements. Stay in the one spot on your face for about 15 seconds or until you hear a beep – this means it's time to move to the next part of your face. Genius!

You'll be all done in about a minute, then it's time to switch it off and rinse your face!

The Foreo is completely waterproof, so all you need to do is give it a good rinse under the tap (which is super easy to do thanks to the silicone shell and bristles).

Do I need one?

In a nutshell, yes! As someone who uses a good cleanser and moisturiser combo (but always applied with my hands), I found I wasn't getting the most out of the skin care, or I was always using too much because my hands were soaking up too much of the product!

The Foreo means you only need to use a tiny amount of cleanser and you can actually feel it giving you a deep clean and relaxing your tense facial muscles.

The best bits:

  • It removes 99.5% of dirt, oil and makeup residue with a small amount of product
  • It exfoilates and cleans deeply without irritating the skin
  • It features adjustable intensities and three bristle zones, so you can find the setting that works best for your skin type
  • The thicker bristles feel like a dream on any areas you might hold tension, like your jaw or in between your brows
  • It's about 100 times more hygenic than anything else you use to wash your face
  • It's a one-off purchase – no brush head replacements necessary!
  • You only have to charge the battery (via USB) every five months
