Let the Diwali celebrations begin

What is Diwali?

Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.”

Diwali is the festival of lights, which is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists in spring in the southern hemisphere. Light is a metaphor of consciousness. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.

Diwali expands over a five day period in the following order:
Dhanteras: Start of Diwali and a day dedicated to cleaning to Welcome Goddess Lakshmi. To celebrate Dhanteras, people traditionally buy gold and new kitchen utensils.

Naraka Chaturdasi/Choti Diwali: Known as ‘Little Diwali’. Coloured artwork ‘Rangoli’ is created in doorways and courtyard of homes along with the opening of fire crackers.

Diwali: Placement of lights and lamps across households.
