Local Community
Caring for a child can be tough and very challenging. While every child is a joy to their parents, families of children with a disability find simple everyday living more difficult. Financial assistance, respite care - time out and community support can make a world of difference.
The Westfield Community Program was launched in early 2008 to address these needs in our local communities. Each Westfield Centre across Australia partners with a local disability service provider to help improve the quality of life for children with disabilities and their families.
Westfield Tuggerah encourages you to support its local community partner Breakaway.
Breakaway
Get Inspired
Breakaway enhances the lives of children and adults with disabilities, by providing respite camps. The camps are for children with high medical needs and / or rare disorders, adults with disabilities as well as parents and siblings.
Breakaway supports families such as David's*, aged 6. David is wheelchair bound, and unable to feed, shower, change or even move without assistance from his parents. He has multiple disabilities including global development delay, cortical vision impairment, uncontrolled epilepsy and a gastrostomy button, thereby requiring 'total care'.
Caring for a child with High Medical Needs is very demanding and often parents are exhausted. Breakaway camps give each member of the family a chance to mix with other adults and children in a similar situation, in a comfortable atmosphere. This often leads to the establishment of a support network that continues long after the camps end.
