Your Guide to the Perfect Valentine's Gift

Romance is more than a box of chocolates and a single rose. Here are some Valentine's Day tips to get you on the right track.

Love is truly in the air as romantics across the country prepare to woo their sweetheart this Valentine's Day, February 14. Westfield Gifting Expert, Margaret Merten shares her Valentine's Day etiquette and gifting tips for those wanting to impress that special someone.

"Every woman likes to feel special, Valentine's Day is the perfect occasion to show and tell her how much you care," says Margaret. "If you want to be in her life long-term, take the time to find the perfect present."

1. Everlasting love - Flowers and chocolates are staple Valentine's Day gifts for a reason, they please. Compliment this winning gesture with a well written card or special gift so she has something to keep forever.

2. Intimates - I don't recommend buying lingerie unless you've been dating for at least 6 months. Find out the essentials first - what size she is, what styles and colours does she usually wear? Above all keep it classy, definitely no themed outfits unless she's made a special request.

3. Best foot forward - A killer pair of heels is a fantastic gift idea that's often overlooked. Go for something on trend and feminine - now is not the time to shop for practicality!

4. Jewellery - Stick to simple, classic jewellery. If the romance is new make sure you opt for something that isn't too personal like a locket or pendant. A more serious statement like a ring is appropriate for those long term relationships.

5. Last minute - On the off chance you manage to forget the most romantic day of the year, think quick. Call your favourite restaurant as they may have a spare table, drop in to your local centre on the way home from work to grab a dozen red roses, box of chocolates and bottle of perfume and make like you knew all along.

From a well thought out card to flowers, surprise dates and special gifts - local experts from Westfield Tuggerah share their Valentine's Day predictions and advice on how to find the perfect gift for your loved one.

PEN TO PAPER

"We sell more than 5000 cards for Valentine's Day," Anna Gaskin, Operations Manager from Supanews, said. "Whether it's fun and flirty or deep and meaningful, choosing the right card with the right words makes all the difference."

Tips for Valentine's success:

  • The power of the written word: A card is a great way to show someone that you care, particularly in these tough economic times. Taking the time to find a personalised card, and including a message that you have put some effort in to, is a great way to show your special someone how much they mean to you.
  • Find the perfect match: Think about your special someone and try to match a card to their personality or interests.
  • Spread the love: A Valentine's Day card is a simple and easy way to share the love with friends and family who may be without a special someone. Find a quirky card to tell them they're thought of.

Recommended product: Supanews Westfield Tuggerah has a huge range of cards starting from $2.99.

PAMPERING

"We're predicting a big week leading up to Valentine's Day with women coming in for some necessary waxing, tanning and beauty treatments to ensure they are looking their best for the special day," Caitlin the Manager at Beautique, Westfield Tuggerah said. "Take the time to spoil yourself. It's sure to rub off!"

  • Get ready: Have all hair, waxing and beauty appointments in the week before Valentine's Day so that you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy getting ready before your big date.
  • Spoil your loved one: Don't hesitate to buy her a voucher for something she wouldn't normally allow herself to buy. Choose from a massage, hair treatment, facial, manicure, pedicure or the whole package to really treat that someone special.
  • Twin treatments: If you're not shy, a couples package is a romantic way to indulge and get in the Valentine's mood together.

Recommended product: Spoil yourself and your loved one with an indulgent 45 minute Hot Stone Massage at Beautique, Westfield Tuggerah, just $145 for the package which includes a massage for both of you!

JEWELLERY

"Popular jewellery items for Valentine's Day are bracelets, rings and earrings that sparkle with diamonds or precious gemstones," Zoe Gardiner, Store manager at PANDORA Westfield Tuggerah said. "Remember - it's not about how much you spend, but what the gift means."

  • It's never too soon: It doesn't matter how long you've been together, jewellery is something every woman loves. If it's a new romance make sure you opt for something that isn't too personal like earrings or a bracelet.
  • Silver lining: Buying jewellery as a Valentine's Day gift doesn't mean you have to break the budget. Silver is a popular choice for many, it's affordable and versatile.
  • Love themed: Heart-shaped pendants, earrings and rings are always popular this time of year and are a sure win if you're feeling overwhelmed by choice. The best thing is to remember to keep it simple, choose from the heart.

FLOWERS

"It's not Valentine's Day without flowers," Leanne Wilson Owner of Tuggerah Flowers, Westfield Tuggerah said. "Roses are always a popular choice and we typically sell between 450-500 on Valentine's Day."

Pre-order:
To avoid disappointment pre-ordering bouquets and flower arrangements at least three days before the day is recommended.

  • Break the mould: Younger generations tend to choose a bright, more fun flower than the rose like gerberas or lilies. If you're unsure or can't remember the name of her favourite flower, play it safe with the traditional dozen red roses.
  • Balloons: This year, spruce up your bouquet and your romance with a loveable helium or stick balloon. A personal ‘I love you' message in amongst those fresh flowers is sure to bring a smile - and what better way to tell her if it's for the first time.

CHOCOLATE

  • Sweethearts: Love inspired chocolates will be sure to please! Choose from a selection of handmade pralines adorned with love art.
  • Packaged deal: Chocolates are a lovely thought when accompanied by a card or special gift. It's all about giving something special to that special someone in your life.
  • Try before you buy: If you want to create melt-in-your-mouth moments on the day, do your homework - does she like milk, white or dark chocolate?

LINGERIE

"Buying lingerie is the perfect way to make your sweetheart feel beautiful about her body," said Christine Prodromou, Marketing Manager from Bras N Things.

  • Need to know: Size - it's every woman's best kept secret. If you can't sneak a quick peek in her drawers while she's in the shower don't stress. Come in store and a team member can help guestimate what size she is. Always go for smaller than larger!
  • Stay in theme: If leopard prints are too daring, stick to reds and pinks when choosing colours and heart shapes if you're after a pattern.
  • Naughty or nice: Be sure to consider her personality when deciding between sweet or sexy garments. What are her everyday tastes in lingerie and styles she usually likes to wear?

Recommended product: Bras N Things, Westfield Tuggerah Temptation Babydoll RRP: $49.99
