Construction

August 2010
Major structural work commenced to remove and replace both the Market and Castlereagh Street pedestrian bridges. Gantries continued to be removed around the site and glass installed to the perimeter of the new retail precinct. Ceiling, column and floor finishes were progressively installed throughout the entire retail precinct. Works to construct the first office floor of the new 85 Castlereagh Street commercial tower continued.

July 2010
The top floor (Level 7) of the new retail precinct was completed and works on the new 85 Castlereagh Street sky lobby commenced. Works to remove and replace the Market and Castlereagh Street pedestrian bridges commenced with the erection of gantries underneath. The first level of the new Pitt Street Mall pedestrian bridge was also constructed.

June 2010
A new tower crane was installed on the site on the 77 Castlereagh Street building. Final ceilings and floor finishes began to be installed on Levels 2, 3, and 4 of the retail precinct. Facade glass continued to be installed around the retail precinct.

May 2010
The first stage of the Westfield Sydney development, the 100 Market Street commercial tower, was occupied by ASIC and works on the top level of retail (Level 7) commenced in the former Imperial Arcade site.

April 2010
The first escalators for the new Westfield Sydney retail precinct arrived on site and began to be installed. Various hoardings were removed around the site and scaffolding erected in its place so that facade upgrade and modification work could continue.

March 2010
Facade glass for the new Westfield Sydney retail precinct began to be installed to the Centrepoint building and retail floors up to Level 5 were constructed in the former Imperial Arcade site. A number of protective gantries were installed around the site at street level and cantilevered hoardings were removed so that works to create the glass retail precinct facade could progress. The refurbishment of the 100 Market Street commercial tower was completed.

February 2010
The construction deck off Castlereagh Street (in the former Imperial Arcade site) was completed and retail floors up to Level 4 of the new retail precinct in this area were built. Facade steel was installed to the Centrepoint building which will hold some of the 7,000 m2 of glass that will be installed to the retail shop fronts. The 100 Market Street commercial lobby finishes, including the public art wall, neared completion with the gantry removal in this area displaying the refurbished entrance to the public.

January 2010
Final finishes on Levels 6 to 10 of the 100 Market Street building were completed and final cleans commenced. In the former Imperial Arcade site, concrete floors and ceilings up to Levels 2 and 3 of the new retail precinct were poured. Over 95% of demolition and construction waste from the site was recycled.

December 2009
Over 97% of demolition and 100% of excavation material was recycled from the retail area of the site this month. Finishes continued in the 100 Market Street commercial tower including installing ceilings, carpets, lighting, tiling and glass. The feature wall for the new lift lobby was also installed.

November 2009
Substantial construction of the new retail precinct in the former Imperial Arcade site continued including construction of sections of Levels 1, 2 and 3. Access to the Centrepoint loading dock was closed to the public and pedestrian tunnels throughout this area were also realigned. On average, over 460 construction personnel are now working on site each day.

October 2009
Concrete foundations, ground slabs and walls were poured throughout the former Imperial Arcade site for the new retail precinct. Over 92% of materials removed across the entire site have now been recycled.

September 2009
A new tower crane was installed in the former Imperial Arcade site and substantial construction commenced in this area. On average over 400 construction workers are now on site each day.

August 2009
The new co-generation plant for the 100 Market Street building was installed and works for the site-wide black water recycling system continued in the former Imperial Arcade site. Most shops in the Skygarden retail area ceased trading to make way for construction works for the new retail precinct.

July 2009
Over 95% of materials removed from site have now been recycled. 60,000 tonnes of sandstone have also been removed and recycled from the former Imperial Arcade site and more than 80% of the new glass façade is now installed on the 100 Market Street building.

June 2009
The new glass facade continued to be installed to the 100 Market Street building with over 50% of the panels in place by the end of June 2009.35, 275 tonnes of sandstone were removed from the former Imperial Arcade site this month. 100% of this stone was recycled.

May 2009
Demolition works were completed on the former Imperial Arcade and Centrepoint Convention Centre site and bulk excavation works commenced in this area.More than 13,200 tonnes of brick, concrete, steel and scrap metal were removed from the construction site this month. Of thhis more than 12,800 tonnes of materials were recycled.

April 2009
The installation of the glass façade began on the 100 Market Street site. The new glass façade, along with light wells throughout the building, result in a decreased lighting energy demand of more than 50% for the 100 Market Street commercial tower and allow for 22 times more daylight to enter the building than the former design. The facade also provides enhanced external views whilst maintaining thermal comfort and minimising glare.

March 2009
The installation of roof steel began on the 100 Market Street site and works to increase the floor space of each level was completed. Demolition works on the former Imperial Arcade and Centrepoint Convention Centre site reached ground level. Over 10, 620 tonnes of materials were removed from the retail area of the site this month, with over 9,990 tonnes (or 94%) of steel, scrap metal and rubble recycled.

February 2009
Retailers in Westfield Centrepoint finished trading to make way for construction works for the new retail precinct. Access through the former Westfield Centrepoint retail area is available to the public between David Jones, Myer, Pitt Street Mall, Castlereagh Street and Market Street via a number of pedestrian tunnels. Almost 4,000 tonnes of brick and concrete, 108 tonnes of steel and 235 tonnes of scrap metal were recycled from the Imperial Arcade and Convention Centre sites last month.

January 2009
Demolition works on the former Imperial Arcade and the Centrepoint Convention Centre sites commenced with the plant rooms and services removed first. The demolition of the Imperial roof slab has been completed. Over 160 construction workers were on site during this month.

Early works

December 2008
Services were disconnected and an internal strip out of the building was completed in the Imperial Arcade in preparation for the beginning of demolition works in January 2009. Protective scaffolding continued to be erected around this area of the site and construction driveway access was installed on Castlereagh Street.

The Market Street access for Sydney Tower restaurants and attractions moved to a new location on Market Street, 20 metres east. Work commenced on the lift lobby area to provide new lift access for the new shopping centre and 100 Market Street commercial tower.

The removal of the façade and the creation of new light wells were completed on the 100 Market Street site.

November 2008
During this month retailers in the Imperial Arcade finished trading and the Arcade was closed to the public. This area will become part of the new shopping centre and the 85 Castlereagh Street commercial tower.

Structural steel beams began to be installed to the 100 Market Street site to increase the floor space on each level.

October 2008
The removal of awnings and erection of hoardings continued around the site on Pitt Street Mall, Market Street and Castlereagh Street. Works to create light wells on the 100 Market Street commercial tower site began.

September 2008
Work commenced on the 100 Market Street commercial tower with the strip out of the interior and removal of external pre-cast panels and façade. Preparatory work for the new Pitt Street substation commenced.
