How to choose basic kitchen equipment

Food-red-pot-feature

In all my years of cooking and writing recipes I hear the same words from family and friends, “I can’t cook!” I don’t believe this. If you learn a few good cooking techniques and use the right equipment you can cook and enjoy cooking. Good equipment and the right equipment are essential to producing delicious, gorgeous and yummy food.

Here is some basic equipment I couldn’t be without:

• Non-stick frying pan - you can cook foods such as chicken, meat, fritters and pancakes.
• Small, medium and large saucepans - great for cooking things such sauces, boiling potatoes or pasta, caramelising onions and soups.
• Stock-pot - essential for stocks, soups, jams and preserves.
• Baking dish - a heavy-duty baking dish for the family roast, vegetables or for even making a cake to feed the crowds.
• Wok - Stir-frying vegetables, chicken, meats or noodles giving them an authentic taste and look.
• A chefs knife - so many times I see friends cutting up their ingredients with a steak knife because they are scared and shy away from a chefs knife. Don’t be, you don’t have to be quick like the professionals but you will produce a better result by using the correct knife. Thinly slicing meat for stir-fries will be easier and vegetables will slice more evenly. It just takes practice.

Stock your kitchen with these few essentials and you will be well on your way, to becoming a fabulous cook.
