Painting one wall a different colour to the rest gives the whole room new perspective. It basically forces attention to where you want it. You might pick an oddly-shaped wall to show off the room's unique architecture, or one that will draw attention to a prized piece of furniture.

While your standard cleaning products can take care of most furniture and fixtures, other things need heavy-duty tools. For your home's exterior, a pressure washer is as much as 50 times more powerful than the garden hose, blasting off dirt from siding, porches and walkways. Inside, look for a carpet cleaner to remove accumulated dirt and stains. You'll be amazed how different it looks.

5. Accessorise

A bold new accessory such as throw pillows, vases and decorative mirrors that draws visitors' eyes can make a room look totally different. Go with the latest trendy pattern, or stick with a solid that complements or contrasts with your walls and furniture for a longer-lasting look.
